Friday Update from Dr. Guaglianone

Harrah Campus Teachers and Parents are on the Ready for High Levels of Learning

This week about forty people attended the first ever iReady Goal Setting event. The 3rd and 4th grade teachers planned and held the event for the rest of the campus and the community. Teachers and families enjoyed pizza and then teachers presented information about iReady and how it informs instruction for students. Then parents, students, and teachers looked at individual student data in iReady and math and created goals for improvement. I am very proud of the teachers for taking such initiative and giving us a model to build upon.

What is Student Engagement in Middle School Classes? – Do you recognize that phrase asked in a question from the television show Jeopardy?  In 8th grade social studies, students collaborate as they play jeopardy to deepen their understanding of human and physical geography.  In the category, “Moments in History,” 7th and 8th-graders conduct independent research on major historical events of their choice. And, during Team Sports at Mt. Adams Middle School, students work together strategically to capture the opposing team's flags. Both of these exhibit Student Engagement and the excitement for learning is contagious.

Math Data informs the Professional Learning Team - This week all of the Harrah Campus Teacher Teams examined math formative assessment data and determined the needs and strengths of students to plan their next couple of weeks of instruction. The teams engage in data dives every two weeks in the subjects of Reading and Math. Harrah teachers use of Professional Learning Communities is taking learning to a whole new level for all of our students!

Go Chargers! Last Friday the Mount Adams Middle School Chargers won their first football game. It was an exciting game for sure. The Volleyball team held their own in their competition as well. Yesterday on the homefield the Middle School football team did an amazing job but fell short. Mr. Hernandez brought back the tradition of recognizing players who exemplified outstanding sportsmanship during the game. Mr. Hernandez announced each team member at the conclusion of the game. Isiah Liulamaga was our first recipient. Congratulations Isiah! Thank you for representing MAMS so well!

The White Swan High School Career Technical Education (CTE) Advisory Board is maximizing the CTE Program and Options for students - On Wednesday September 27th the CTE advisory board will have a bi-annual meeting. At this meeting the advisory board will conduct a program review for all White Swan High School CTE pathways, end of year review for the 2022-2023 school year along with new program and framework approvals. The newest class and framework to be approved is baking. YUM!  The advisory board will have the opportunity to talk with our teachers and ask questions to see how our classes and pathways are serving students. Teacher, A.J. Grooters invited two FFA student members who will present to the board about their experience and projects in FFA.

Associated Student Body and Student Athletics will get a boost - Mr. Muller will be writing a grant for about $10,000 to replace the money that sports used to make on the door receipts.  It has been a joy to see families be able to attend games and support our student athletes.  The District hopes to be able to continue not charging for game admission and that way more families are able to attend. Our student athletes are keeping up their grades and about 90% of the athletes are eligible to play.  Congratulations Cougar Athletes!

More Ways for White Swan Students to Graduate! - Mrs. Tenney and Mrs. Jarnecke met with the people from the Graduation Alliance this week. Our district has signed an agreement with Graduation Alliance so that we can provide help to students that did not graduate within the last five years along with current students that are seriously credit deficient and are not able to graduate before aging out. This online program will help our students work towards receiving a diploma. If you know of a student who has not graduated and would like to make the additional effort, please have them contact the White Swan High School Office.
