Identification of Multilingual Learners

Multilingual learners are identified in two ways.

One way is through the Home Language Survey (HLS) which is completed during registration.  If a student’s home language is something other than English, the student is automatically identified to take the WIDA Language Proficiency Screener.  The WIDA screener is a program placement test.  Depending on the student’s score, they are either placed into our multilingual program or they are identified as not needing this service.

See the Language Proficiency Screener and Placement Flow Chart.

Native American students who are academically at risk can also be identified to take the Language Proficiency Screener.  This is done through the Tier 2 process.  If you have a Native American student who is academically at risk, talk to your building administrators regarding referral to your building Tier 2 team.

See the Process for Identifying Title III Eligible American Indian Students Flow Chart.

TEACHER ACCESS INTERPRETERS AND TRANSLATORS

If you need an interpreter for a parent/guardian meeting or conference:

1.  Contact your building secretary through email asking for an interpreter at least one week before they are needed and supply all the needed information (date, time, event).

2.  An interpreter will be scheduled and you will be notified through a calendar invite of the staff member who will interpret for you at the meeting/conference.

3.  You contact the parent to let them know an interpreter has been scheduled.

If you need an educational document translated for a parent/guardian:

1.  Contact your building secretary through email asking for the translation and attach the document at least one week before the document is needed.

2.  The document will be translated and emailed back to you.

3.  If you choose to translate the document yourself through a program, ie:  Google translate, please check the document to ensure the meaning of the translation is accurate.

If you have questions regarding this, please contact the Director of Teaching and Learning.  RCW 28A.183 requires districts to have procedures in place for families to access their home language when collaborating with schools on their students' education.
